Fix: Grammarly Not Working in Word

Tony
April 14, 2023

I recently came across an issue with the Grammarly add-in for Microsoft Word. When opening Word, the Grammarly add-in loads and overrides the built-in spellchecker. You would start typing words incorrectly and initially it would flag them up. However, shortly after it would no longer recognise these as incorrect words. You would close the add-in, but Word’s built-in spellchecker would no longer work and you would have to manually enable it.

Here’s how to get the add-in working every time:

  1. Click on Grammarly on the ribbon at the top
  2. Select ‘Settings’
  3. Disable the first checkbox (‘Start Grammarly when Word opens’)

Word will then be able to correctly decide which spellchecker to use. Even if Grammarly is closed, Word’s built-in spellchecker will be enabled, and vice versa.
